There are many data centers and hosting companies who claim to operate 'green'. However "green" data centres are not created equal. A lot of hosting companies who claim to be green simply offset their energy consumption no matter what it is, with REC's. Although this is a step in the right direction, it is a long way from where we have to go. Often data centre's don't even count the electricity that is required for cooling and lighting etc and instead just offset the electricity that goes into powering the servers themselves. However, the biggest energy requirements in a data centre come from the inefficent air conditioning systems most data centre's use.
So how do you tell if a data centre is truely green?
The best indication of a data centre being truly green is it's Power Usage Effectiveness.
A data center may buy REC's to offset the dirty electricity they use, but that does not make its energy usage low. A data center may install Hot/Cold Aisles, but that does not necessarily result in the best possible energy saving. The PUE of a data center is the key figure that shows how energy efficient a data center actually is and therefore how truely green it is.
Little Web Feet's data centre has a PUE of 1.14 whereas most data centers in the US, according to the EPA, have PUE’s of 2.0 to 3.0.
How does our data centre have such a low PUE?
- The building is environmentally friendly with an R value of 50
- Virtualization cuts the server footprint by 80%
- AMD powered IBM BladeCenter servers consume less than 1/2 of the energy of regular servers
- Solar Tubes reduce energy consumed by interior lighting by 2100watts
- Low energy, water based, air conditioning systems use 90% less electricity than refrigerants
- A completely white reflective building reduces cooling needs
- The green roof, (underconstruction), can reduce cooling needs by 20degrees
The fact that our data centre has been able to reduce it's energy needs has made it possible to be the first and only 100% completely solar powered, carbon free data centre that does not need to use offsets.

How safe is your data?
Security
We cannot claim this is Fort Knox but we do have guard dogs and cameras on premises. Our network is guarded by:
* State of the art Cisco 5500 series Adaptive Security Appliances which provides advanced application-aware firewall services with identity-based access control, denial of service attack protection, and more -- all built upon market proven Cisco PIX security appliance technology
* SOURCEfire's Intrusion, Detection and Prevention system with Real-time Network Awareness which provides protection against both known and unknown threats powered by Snort rules. This protects against threats by detecting all possible vulnerabilities that could be exploited.
* RNA - an innovative, passive sensing technology which provides real-time network intelligence that allows full automation of IPS tuning and security event analysis
Monitoring
Little Web Feet's servers are monitored 24/7. Our data centre runs redundant monitoring servers that monitor each piece of equipment on our network. Our monitoring is so advanced it will notify our NOC (network operating center) if there is any issues with our switches, routers, servers, bandwidth, etc. so we can proactively handle potential problems. This type of proactive monitoring ensures our clients the most possible uptime available.
Spam & Virus Protection
Every email message coming to any account on our servers is put through an 11 step spam protection process, then it is scanned for viruses using the acclaimed Clam AntiVirus, which prevents emails containing viruses and phishing scams from reaching your inbox.

There are some significant differences between Linux servers and Windows servers: but most of these differences only effect the people managing and maintaining the servers themselves. As a Little Web Feet hosting client, you are our guest and our data centre takes care of the all the server managing.
So the choice comes down to what kind of software you would like to use. The biggest differences between the 2 platforms that you will notice is the difference in the software that is supported. With windows you get Microsoft programs like: ASP, MS Access, DSN Connections etc. With Linux you get a platform that supports thousands of opensource programs like Joomla and Drupal.
If you just need a simple html site that isn't going to need a database or any advanced coding, a linux or windows plan will make little difference.
And in the end, if you realize you need a different platform - we can always move you to a different server.
If you have any questions or need advice on the right plan for you, please don't hesitate to contact us. We love to talk shop! |
